Porphyry is a very dense volcanic stone that sits vertically within the mountain. It consists of large-grained crystals such as quartz and feldspar, dispersed in a fine-grained matrix. Egyptian and Roman empires used porphyry stone extensively for pavements, buildings and monuments. Some relics of these remain today which is a true testament to the strength and endurance of porphyry stone.
Porphyry stone it blasted out of it’s formation from a mountain. This extraction often requiring less effort than extracting basalt & bluestone, granite or travertine which is sawed out of monolithic, block formations. When porphyry is blasted, it comes out as random flagging that can be used for crazy paving. Others are then sorted according to approximate size and thickness range. It is then moved to cutting equipment to be shaped into cobblestones, random length rectangles and other shapes used as pavers. This process makes porphyry stone pavers eco-friendly and incorporated more in outdoor designs, moving away from conventional manufacturing of concrete pavers which expels heat and carbon.
Porphyry stone pavers are widely popular for domestic and commercial designs for its consistency and durability. They come in a variety of flooring formats. The hard-wearing surface of porphyry stone pavers makes it preferred for driveways and high traffic areas. You can also use porphyry stone pavers around pools, patios and walkways as they have an excellent non-slip surface even when wet.
Porphyry stone paving installation is an art, usually requiring a longer time frame due to the inherent natural random thicknesses. This makes installation costs of porphyry higher compared to basalt & bluestone, granite pavers or travertine pavers , however the results are truly remarkable while adding a touch of European style to your very own home.
The superior physical characteristics of porphyry stone allows it to resist chemicals, salt, acid and high temperature variations and requiring very little on-going maintenance.
