Marble is a metamorphic stone, formed from limestone that has been subjected to extreme pressure and high temperatures deep in the earth. The primary mineral in limestone, calcium carbonate, recrystallises into large, interlocking crystals of calcite during this process, which creates the texture and patterns that give marble its luxurious appearance. When the limestone is pure and free from inclusions, marble will be white. However, if the limestone has veins, clay, iron oxide or other minerals, marble can be off-white, grey, tan, pink, blue, green, black or show varied colouration. In addition, marble may have veins of gold, brown, tan, pink, or other colours. Because it is formed naturally, the texture, colour and patterns of the stone vary from quarry to quarry and within a quarry. Because of this, no two pavers are the same.
