Your outdoor areas are part of your home, and just like anything else, they need a little care to keep looking great. Whether it’s the patio out back, the driveway out front, or the path through your garden, these areas are exposed to weather, foot traffic, and life in general. Over time, things like dirt, grease, mould, and even rust can build up. The good news? You can clean it all up yourself with the right products and some basic know-how.
This guide is here to help you tackle the most common outdoor stains using cleaners made for surfaces like concrete, pavers, porcelain, masonry, wet cast products, exposed aggregate, and many natural stones.
Before You Begin: Read This First
To get the best results and keep things safe, follow these six simple steps:
- Put your safety gear on – Always wear chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and safety boots.
- Wet the surface first – This helps prevent the product from soaking in too fast or marking the surface.
- Mix the cleaner with water – Follow the label instructions carefully.
- Scrub the area thoroughly – Let the product sit for the time recommended.
- Rinse with clean water – This removes loosened grime and leftover product.
- Neutralise the surface – Use a pH neutral cleaner like REFRESH. Then give it one final rinse.
Extra Tips:
- Always test the cleaner in a small, out-of-sight area first.
- Some stains may need a second round of cleaning.
- If you’re planning to seal afterward, let the surface dry completely for at least two days.
- Regular cleaning with a neutral or mild alkaline cleaner will help your surfaces stay looking great and extend the life of your sealer.
Note: While some of these products may also work on indoor surfaces, this guide focuses on outdoor use only. Always read the label and exercise care.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
1. Cement and Grout Residue
What it looks like: A white or hazy film left after paving or tiling.
Use:
- Anti Eff – Great for concrete, clay, and terracotta. Not recommended for bluestone or limestone.
- Sapphire – Ideal for more delicate surfaces like bluestone and limestone.
Tip: Wet the area first and rinse thoroughly after. If the residue has hardened, you may need a second application.
2. Dirty or Stained Grout
What it looks like: Dark, uneven, or greasy grout lines between pavers or tiles.
Use:
- HD Cleaner – Breaks down grease and built-up grime.
- Maestro – Great for organic stains like mould, leaves, and animal mess.
- Sapphire – For tougher stains or red dirt deposit
3. Efflorescence (White Powdery Stains)
What it looks like: White, chalky salt deposits on the surface.
Use:
- Anti Eff – For concrete, clay, and terracotta.
- Sapphire – Safer option for bluestone and limestone.
- Acidic Cleaner – Best for hard, non-sensitive surfaces like granite.
What causes it: Salt rising through the surface from within the stone or mortar bed. It’s best to remove it before it hardens.
4. Epoxy Grout or Wax Residue
What it looks like: Sticky or shiny film that won’t wash off easily.
Use:
- HD Cleaner
Tip: Let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing. Repeat if needed.
5. General Outdoor Cleaning
What it looks like: General dirt, grime, mild grease or mess from daily use.
Use:
- Alkaline Cleaner – Covers most outdoor messes except for efflorescence. Works on tiles, pavers, concrete, and masonry.
6. Oily or Greasy Stains
What it looks like: Cooking oil, BBQ grease, or food spills.
Use:
- HD Cleaner
Tip: Clean up oil spills as quickly as possible before they soak in.
7. Ink or Dye Stains
What it looks like: Pen, marker, or dye transfer.
Use:
- HD Cleaner
Tip: Let the cleaner dwell on the surface for a few minutes before scrubbing.
8. Rust Stains
What it looks like: Orange-brown marks from metal furniture or tools.
Use:
- Anti Eff
Tip: Rinse thoroughly and consider sealing the surface after cleaning.
9. Soap Scum
What it looks like: Chalky or cloudy film around showers or splash areas.
Use:
- HD Cleaner or Sapphire
10. Tyre and Rubber Marks
What it looks like: Black streaks from vehicles, bins, or furniture.
Use:
- HD Cleaner
Sealing and Ongoing Care
Once your surface is clean, sealing is highly recommended. It helps prevent stains from soaking in and makes maintenance much easier over time.
After any strong cleaning, always neutralise the surface with REFRESH before sealing. Then allow at least two full days for the area to dry completely.
For day-to-day or weekly cleaning, stick with a pH neutral or mild alkaline cleaner to help keep things clean without harming the surface or breaking down the sealer.
